Powers, Garth L.
Garth L. Powers, 64, of Marion, passed away peacefully in his home Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, following a long illness. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Garth is survived by his wife, Susie; daughters, Kari and Heidi Powers, both of Omaha; his brother, Jim Powers and wife Patty of Cedar Rapids; and his niece, Kristin (Powers) Waldon, her husband, Ted, and their son, Miller, of Seattle. Garth is also survived by brothers-in-law, Mark Rae of Cedar Falls, Russell Rae of Central City and David Rae of Salt Lake City; sisters-in-law, Mary Rae of Denver, Gail and Larry Blum of Marion, Kathy Murdoch of Marion, and Laura Rae of Thailand; and 16 nieces and nephews.
Garth was born June 17, 1947, in Vinton, to John L. and Ethel M. Powers. He graduated from Washington High School in 1966. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army, spending the majority of his tour in Germany. After returning to the U.S., he spent the next 40 years in the food sales industry, retiring from Kemps LLC in 2005. Garth married Susan J. Rae on Sept. 12, 1971 in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Garth enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and traveling. He was particularly taken with the coasts of southern California. Garth and Susie celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in September.
Garth was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel; and nephew, Stuart Powers.
