Powell, James A.
James A. Powell, 79, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral Service: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. David Beckman officiating. Entombment, with military rites, will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sandra; children, Trina (Jordon) McAreavy of Cedar Rapids, Julie Powell of Cedar Rapids and Steven Powell of Texas; grandchildren, Trevor Powell, Spencer Powell, Courtney Powell and Logan McAreavy; great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Ashlyn Lamb and Kharington Powell; siblings, David (Dorothy) Powell of Waterloo, Richard Powell of Kewaunee, Ill., and Devita (Jack) Blaylock of Cresco; and his beloved dog, Lady.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Allan Powell; and two brothers, Bill and Jack Powell.
James Allen Powell was born Dec. 18, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Harvey and Mary (Kennedy) Powell. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. On July 29, 1957, he married Sandra Smith in Cedar Rapids.
James was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed being with family, especially his grandchildren.
James will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
