Potter, Mildred Eleanor (Cone)
Mildred Eleanor (Cone) Potter passed away at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, Iowa, on Aug. 3, 2009, at the age of 98, after a long struggle with cancer. Visitation will be today from 4 until 7 p.m. at Shelly Funeral Home in Manchester, and one hour before the funeral service at the church. Services will be at the Manchester United Methodist Church on Saturday at 1 p.m., with Pastor Roger Henry officiating. Burial will be made in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Millie was born Aug. 30, 1910, to Ray and Clara (Brecher) Cone, and graduated from Buena Vista College in 1932. She married Donald B. Potter in 1934 and taught school in Lawton, Larrabee, Greeley, Strawberry Point, Dundee and West Delaware schools. She managed the Coffee Den Cafe, the family business, for 10 years.
Millie loved her church, her family, teaching, baking cookies, sewing, knitting, and her many friends. She lived independently, with some help, in her own home until July 14th of this year.
She is survived by her son, Jim (Beverly) Potter of Urbandale; her daughter, Nancy (Fred) Miller of Manchester; eight grandchildren, Seven Potter of Marshalltown, Kimerly (Sam) Mina of Ventura, Calif., Julie (Lou) Bueno of Urbandale, Lori (Roger) Nagle of Highland Ranch, Colo., Lisa (Lee) Wright of Wauconda, Ill., Fritz (Joni) Miller of Sioux City, David (Stephanie) Miller of Chandler, Ariz., and Betsy Clester of Milwaukie, Ore.; 18 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband in 1997; her son, Warrant Officer William Potter in Vietnam in 1969; an infant grandson, William James Miller; her parents, one sister and three brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials either to the Manchester United Methodist Church-Second Helpings program or to the Donald and Mildred Potter Memorial Scholarship, c/o First State Bank, 300 E Main St., Manchester, IA 52057.
