Porter, George Raphael
George Raphael Porter, 83, died May 14, 2010, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home after a long illness. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Edgewood. A memorial service will be held Monday at 10 a.m., also at the church.
George was born Sept. 19, 1926, in rural Edgewood, Iowa to Ray and Mildred (Parkinson)Porter. He married Una Morley on June 28, 1950, in Garber. Born to this union were three children. The Porters farmed in rural Edgewood until 1981 and then ran Porter Construction until 2001. George made custom furniture at his wood shop in Edgewood until 2007.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking, dancing with Una, and playing cards. Special to his heart were his grandkids and great grandkids.
George is survived by his wife of 59 years, Una; his children, Jack (Gwen) Porter of Edgewood, Barb (Robert) Murphy of Cedar Rapids and Gary Porter of Edgewood; grandchildren, Janie (Matthew) Walthart of Winthrop, Katie (Aaron) Crane of Manchester, Jill (Danny) Kleinlein of Strawberry Point, Travis, Charlie, Shane, Kelsey and Dakota Murphy of Cedar Rapids and Kyle and Emilie Porter of Edgewood; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Mildred Porter; sister, Deletta Elvers; brothers-in-law, Dale Elvers and Willard Steen; father-in-law, Elmer Morley; mother-in-law, Blanche Morley; and a niece, Darla Schroeder.
Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is assisting with arrangements.
