Poppe, Raymond
Raymond Poppe, 82, of Monticello, died Thursday evening, March 3, 2011, at Jones Regional Hospital, Anamosa, following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in Wayne Zion Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Wessels will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.
Surviving are his sister-in-law, Ruth Harms, Monticello; a nephew, John (Kathy) Harms, Monticello; two nieces, Jenny (Pat) Lambert, Monticello, and Brenda (Mick) Crumpton, Manchester; and a special cousin, Marla (Nick) Paulsen, Center Junction, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evalena, on Feb. 21, 2007; and two brothers-in-law, Marvin and Willis Harms.
Raymond John Poppe was born June 20, 1928, in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa. He was the son of Fred H. and Katherine (Ricklefs) Poppe. Ray attended Wayne Township No. 3. He then started farming with his parents. Raymond J. Poppe and Evalena M. Harms were married Oct. 3, 1948, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Wayne Township. Ray operated Poppe Seed Co. and was a DeKalb Seed Corn dealer for many years. He also operated Poppe Clerking Service, working with local auctioneers at sales and was certifying inspector for the ASCS office.
Ray enjoyed bowling on the Jakes Standard Team and was a member of the Monticello Golf Club for many years. He was a charter member of the Jones County Driftbusters Snowmobile Club. He also loved to play bridge and euchre.
Ray was a life long member of Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. He was baptized on July 10, 1928, and confirmed his faith on May 24, 1942. Ray held many church offices over the years. He was the treasurer of the congregation, served on the memorial board and was Wayne Zion Cemetery Sexton for many years. He was also active in the Monticello community, serving on the park board, senior housing board and Jones County Fair Board.
