Poppe, Helen Agnes

Helen Agnes Poppe, 90, of Strawberry Point, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. A private family service will be held. Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Strawberry Point. Interment: Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point.

She was born Dec. 3, 1922, at Davenport, the daughter of Arthur and Lillian (Schmidt) Farrance. Helen was raised and educated in the Davenport area. Helen was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal before her marriage to Loyd Poppe on Dec. 5, 1948, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Davenport. Together they farmed near Mount Joy, Princeton, and in 1964 moved to Strawberry Point. Helen was a farm wife and mother.

Helen was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Card Club and the Northeast Iowa Antique Association. She did volunteer work with the Iowa Department of the Blind and received the Governor's Volunteer Award.

Survivors include her husband, Loyd Poppe of Strawberry Point; seven children, Susan (Roger) Ward of Epworth, James (Pamela) Poppe of Des Moines, Barbara Cole of Ely, Beverly (David) Pech of Lamont, Loyd Jr. of Red Boiling Springs, Tenn., Kenneth (Debra) Poppe of Norwalk and Patricia (John) Grimes of North Freedom, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, plus one to come in April; and one brother, Arthur Farrance of Rock Island, Ill.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Jean Beauchat and Mae Kuehl (Helen's twin sister).
