Polton, Shirley Jean Fuller
Shirley Jean Fuller Polton left this earth on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at St. Lukes Hospital from a brief illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will follow in Mount Clark Cemetery in Central City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Shirley was born March 27, 1936, in the family home at Central City, the daughter of Emory and Elaine Miller Fuller. When she was 2 years old her father passed away, and the family moved to Cedar Rapids. She attended Taylor Elementary and Roosevelt Junior/Senior High School, graduating in June 1954.
Friday, July 16, 1954 she married Hubert Junior Polton in Cedar Rapids. She is survived by her children Donald of Cedar Rapids, Darrell (Renae) of Oxford, Deborah Griffin of Cedar Rapids with whom she made her home since September 1996, and Theresa Roff (Robert) of Birmingham; 5 grandchildren, Staff Sergeant Justin Roff (Alicia), Shawn Roff, Christine Polton, Jeffrey Irvin, Curtis Roff; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is her sister Patsy Oltmann of Anamosa, sisters-in-law Phyliss Mclaud of Cedar Rapids and Anita Fuller of Toddville, brother-in-law Harold White of Cedar Rapids, nine nieces and 10 nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died just 52 days before their 42nd wedding anniversary, her parents, her brother Ray L. Fuller of Toddville, and her beloved family dog, Bud.
Hubert and Shirley lived in Cedar Rapids until September 1979, when they moved to Iowa City where she cooked at various places. Dear to her heart were the last 10 years she worked, when she cooked six years at Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and four years at Delta Zeta Sorority. She enjoyed being around these lovely young ladies, and said they kept her feeling young.
She liked spending time with her family. Also reading, sewing, music, pencil puzzles and Hawkeye Basketball.
She was an avid NASCAR/Nextel Cup racing fan. GO JEFF GORDON !!!!!
