Poggenpohl, M. Joanne
M. Joanne Poggenpohl, 75, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after a short illness. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
Joanne was born Aug. 10, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of George and Mary (Hannon) Heath. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Cedar Rapids in 1954, and received an associates of arts degree from Kirkwood Community College.
She married Kenneth Schmitz Jan. 15, 1955, in Cedar Rapids. The couple later divorced. On Dec. 7, 1972, Mary married Harry Sutton in Iowa City. Harry passed away in 1985. On Nov. 6, 1992, she married Charles Poggenpohl in Sharon Center. Charles died in 1993.
Joanne was a secretary at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, retiring in 1993. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Iowa City VFW Auxiliary, Iowa City Eagle's Auxiliary and Iowa City Women of the Moose.
Survivors include her children, Donna Jones of Iowa City, Tim Schmitz (Shirley) of Oklahoma City, Tom Schmitz (Ilona) of Wylie, Texas, and Don Schmitz (Linda Gramm) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Michael, Justin, Kenneth, Mike, Carol, Triena, Brandi and Rachel; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lillian of Minneapolis.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul Heath; and a great-grandson, Austin Jones.
