Plate Jr., Dwight G.
Dwight G. Plate Jr., 73, of Alburnett, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a courageous battle with leukemia. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Alburnett United Methodist Church, by the Rev. H. Burr Bryant. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors by American Legion Post 298 of Marion.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Roberta; children from his first marriage, Pamela Bolinder of Oregon, Cynthia (Evan) Wilkinson of California and Jeffrey (Deborah) Plate of Illinois; he and Roberta's children, Deborah (Larry Dyslin) Rempt of Marion, Lorrie (Allan) Timmerman of Marion and Dwight Plate III of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren, Stevan, Candace, Adam, Jeffrey Alec, David, Dan, Danielle, Daltyn, Dakota, Desirae, Justin, Zachary and Cameron; a great-granddaughter, Carlee; one great-grandson on the way; a half brother and half sister; two stepsisters, Margaret Andrews and JoAnn Decker, both of Marshalltown; and many, many close friends.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Elizabeth Ann Bruene.
Dwight was born July 8, 1937, in Marshalltown, the son of Dwight G. and Eleanor M. (West) Plate Sr. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1955. On Jan. 31, 1969, Dwight was united in marriage to Roberta K. Holland in Astoria, Ill. Dwight served above and beyond the call of duty with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked as a test technician at Rockwell for 35 years.
Dwight was a member of the Hiawatha Mohawks and Cedar Sams Camping Clubs, American Legion Post 298 of Marion, and the Alburnett United Methodist Church. He and Roberta happily wintered in Texas for many years.
