PHYLLIS ESTHER WOODFORD

Phyllis Esther Woodford, 94, longtime Cedar Rapids resident, died Sunday, March 26, 2017, in Burleson, Texas.
Phyllis was born June 7, 1922, in Jackson Township, Linn County, Iowa, the daughter of Avon and Bernice (Holcomb) Shakespeare. Phyllis graduated from Iowa State Teachers College, now University of Northern Iowa, in May 1943. She taught kindergarten for one year in Yankton, S.D. On April 28, 1945, Phyllis was united in marriage to Robert E. Woodford. She and
Robert enjoyed traveling together during their retirement. Phyllis was an active member of People's Unitarian Church in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include three children, Yale (Sandy) Woodford of Texas City, Texas, Ann Peek of Alvarado, Texas, and Scott (Emarie) Woodford of Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren, Robert J. Peek of Lewisville, Texas, Jane (Brock) Ostrander of Burleson, Texas, Brett "Woody" Woodford of Jacksonville, Fla., and Tracy M. Woodford of Las Vegas; one great-grandson, Bryan P. Peek; one sister, Mary Somers of Monticello; and one brother, Avon Shakespeare of Kingsburg, Calif.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert E. Woodford; and a brother, Kent Shakespeare.
A celebration of Phyllis' life will be held at her daughter's residence in Alvarado, Texas, at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1.
