Phyllis Leah Amey was born to Matthew and Leah Amey on June 25, 1927, in Clinton, Iowa, and peacefully died on Feb. 1, 2022, at the Clarence Nursing Home in Clarence, Iowa. Per her wish, she was cremated. Family and friends are invited
for hot drinks and pastries and to celebrate her life from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb 5, at Ditto's Restaurant in Stanwood, Iowa. A private family service will be held at a
later date.
Phyllis was the 12th of 13 children, was affectionately nicknamed "Dinah" early on, and it stuck with the Ameys for her lifetime. Her first love was enjoying her family and close friends and doing anything she could to make their lives better with an easy laugh, unsolicited--yet often--practical advice, or readiness with a generous helping hand. Her pastimes included women's league bowling, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, bingo, gameshows, board games and especially playing cards. Her children teasingly referred to her as "Mrs. Hoyle" and before the internet, she would field phone calls from family because she knew the rules to every card game and you "played by the rules!"
Prior to marriage and motherhood when she ran the home and raised her children, Phyllis had quit high school for enjoyable work as a WWII wartime "Ma Bell" switchboard operator in Chicago. Her last jobs prior to her retirement were in home health care, after earning her GED and her home health care aid certification in her 50s.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Thomas R. Hyde (Ellie Holets) of Ocala, Fla., Barbara J.Hyde of Katy, Texas, Peggy Miller-Peterman of Clarence, Iowa, and Steven M. Hyde of Flagstaff, Ariz., and two "adopted" daughters, Donna (Frahm) Arp of Conroy, Iowa, and Ellie Holets; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her 12 siblings. Memorials may be directed to the Clarence Nursing Home or to the Clarence Community Ambulance Service, Clarence, Iowa, as Phyllis was deeply thankful for their remarkable services.
