Phillips, Shirley G.
Shirley G. Phillips, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Manor Care. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with visitation starting at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate.
Surviving to honor her memory are her children, David (Brenda) Phillips of Virginia Beach, Va., Susan Finley-Phillips of Hiawatha and Steve Phillips; daughter-in-law, Teresa North of Mount Vernon; sister, Barb (Wayne) Opheim of Mason City; grandchildren, Maxwell, Garrett, Niya, Kaylee, Aubrey, Alex and Jonel; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Donald.
Shirley Gail Fisher was born Feb. 14, 1927, in Rolfe, Iowa, to William and Vera (Garrett) Fisher. She married Donald E. Phillips on June 10, 1948, in Waterloo. Shirley studied music and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa. She was also an avid music teacher and touched the hearts and lives of many of the students she taught. Shirley was a member of the string quartet that participated in many weddings and special events. She was a violinist in the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra for over 40 years.
In addition to her music, she was also an avid gardener. Everything she touched turned to gold. She would spend time with her grandchildren, planting vegetables and reaping the fruits of her labors. Shirley was a member of the Beethoven Club and actively participated in its events and musical functions.
