PHILLIP EARL MYERS
Bowling Green, Ky.
Dr. Phillip Earl Myers, 73, of Bowling Green, Ky., passed away Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at his residence surrounded by his family.
The Ottumwa, Iowa, native was born April 26, 1944, to Ellsworth and Marjorie McElroy Myers. Dr. Myers received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Colorado and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
Dr. Myers was a preeminent Civil War historian, focusing on European Diplomacy. He was cited in several publications, and authored the books, "Caution and Cooperation" and "Dissolving Tensions."
Dr. Myers was a teacher at Ottumwa High School, a professor at Bellevue University in Nebraska, held positions of professor and graduate dean at Minnesota State University in Mankato and was dean of Graduate Studies at William Patterson University in New Jersey. Dr. Myers retired from Western Kentucky University as director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and a member of NCURA, and was the founder of the WKU Research Foundation. He retired from the National Guard as lieutenant colonial.
Dr. Myers is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Catherine; two daughters, Sarah and Sonja Myers; one son, Andrew Myers; one brother, David Myers, and his wife, Tammy, of Cedar Rapids; Bella, his loving Aussie dog; and many extended family members.
Private memorial service for family will be held at a later date.
Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home in Bowlng Green is in charge of arrangements.
