Phelps, Mary Jean
Mary Jean Phelps, 54, of Cedar Rapids, died at the home of her daughter after a courageous battle with cancer, on Monday, July 29, 2013. Services: noon Saturday at First Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Cymaron Dawson. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Mary was born Feb. 18, 1959, in Humboldt, Tenn., to Isaac and Mary Pledge Sr. She married David Phelps on March 23, 1983, in Cedar Rapids. Mary was known as a great cook and loved spending time with her family, friends and grandchildren. Mary was a member of Redemption Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, David; children, Andre Griffith of Pekin, Ill., LaTanya Jackson, David Pledge, Tanika Phelps, Jessica Phelps and Amber Phelps, all of Cedar Rapids; stepdaughter, Alicia Rogers; mother, Mary Pledge of Cedar Rapids; siblings, Jerry Jimmison, Carlene (Charles) Hodges, Linda (James) Martin, Isaac Pledge Jr., Joe Pledge and Jarvis (Cindy) Pledge, all of Cedar Rapids; and 24 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father; grandparents, Alex and Nannie Sue Pledge; and aunt, Mildred Pledge.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
