Phelps, David L.
David L. Phelps, 68, of Marion, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids by Pastor Marty Boller. Inurnment: Hala Cemetery at a later date. Friends may visit at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Monday until the time of service.
David is survived by his wife, Carol Mumm-Maresh Phelps of Marion; five children, Darryl, Donald, Paula, Calvin and Timothy; five stepdaughters, Dawn (Dean) Richmond, Denise Wiedemeier, Darnelle Lester, DeVon Maresh and Dana Kenney; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 10 siblings, Charles Phelps, Shirley Taulbee, Sharon (Gary) Schneekloth, Larry Phelps, Linda (Lee) Stewart, Mary (Doug) Bell, Ron (Patty) Phelps, Janet (Loren) Lovell, Lora (Okee) Walker and Nora (Arnie) Vaupel; half sister, Joyce; and many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dianna Phelps; and great-great-granddaughter, Nahla Rose Alloway.
David Lynn Phelps was born July 23, 1943, in rural Benton County, the son of Eber “Shorty” Dillman and Evelyn Sarah (Nelson) Phelps. During Vietnam David was stationed in Germany, where he learned to speak German.
David had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed motorcycling riding, camping, fishing, gambling, horses, and shopping at Goodwill and Dollar stores. For their honeymoon David and Carol logged over 5,000 miles on their Honda Goldwing out west. David loved having coffee at Happy Chef with his friends, especially with Don, whom he missed dearly.
A memorial fund has been established in David's name.
