Phelps, Carol E. Mumm-Maresh
Carol E. Mumm-Maresh Phelps, 67, of Cedar Rapids, got her wings on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at Heritage Care Center. Friends may visit Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home. Inurnment: Hala Cemetery, Walford, at a later date.
Carol is survived by five daughters, Dawn (Dean) Richmond of Fairfax, Denise Wiedemeier of Cedar Rapids, Darnelle Maresh-Lester of Port Byron, Ill., DeVon Maresh of Fulton, Ill., and Dana (Jason) Kenney of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, Danielle, Dillon, Justin, Jessica, Cheynne, William, Trevor, Samantha, Amanda and Raymond; four sisters, Miona “Marie” Johnson, Darlene (Glen) Schuller, Rheta (Wayne) Wenzel and Marilyn (Bob) Vosdingh; three brothers, Bill, Vernon and Eddie Mumm; and many nieces and nephews.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, David, who passed away in August 2011; her parents; son-in-law, Raymond “Shorty” Carpenter; sister, Wynette Burger; brother, Duane Mumm; and brother-in-law, Duane Johnson.
Carol was born June 1, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Mr. Lester T. and Miona (Probst) Mumm. She grew up in the Swisher-Walford area and graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. Carol married Larry Maresh on June 16, 1962, in Cedar Rapids. They later divorced. Carol was a homemaker who also worked part-time at the Sacred Heart Convent and later retired from a full-time position at Oral B. She married David Phelps in the summer of 1997. For their honeymoon David and Carol logged over 5,000 miles on their Honda Goldwing out west.
Carol loved spending time with her grandchildren as well as David's family. She also enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye football, camping, gardening, cooking, feeding the birds and numerous trips to the casino.
