Pettit, John B.
John B. Pettit, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died early Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 J St. SW, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. William Harnish. Burial: Grandview Cemetery, Fayette. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
John is survived by four daughters, Susan McNulty of Cedar Rapids, Teresa Coder of Scotch Grove, Daisy Langston of Nebraska, and Diane Forbes of Anamosa; a brother, William Pettit of Cedar Rapids; sister, LaVonne Speed of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Emma (Carlson) Pettit; three brothers, David, Frank and Edward Pettit; and a sister, Leone Speed.
John was born Dec. 9, 1927, in Illyria Township, Fayette County, Iowa, and came to Cedar Rapids as a teenager. He was a heavy equipment operator and foreman for Akers Construction in Cedar Rapids for many years. John was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and a member of the IBEW Union until his retirement.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to John's family.
