Peterson, Galyn Albin
Galyn Albin Peterson, 96, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died at Grandview Health Care Center, Oelwein, of age related causes on Father's Day, June 16, 2013. At his request, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa Medical Department in Iowa City. A “Celebration of Lives” Memorial Service for both Galyn and his son, Mark, who died April 29, 2013, will be held Sunday, June 30, at 3 p.m. at New Covenant Bible Church, 3090 North Center Point Rd., Cedar Rapids, IA 52411.Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Galyn, son of Albin and Olga (Hackerson) Peterson, was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Ira, Iowa. He was the oldest of four children. Galyn spent most of his childhood days in and around Albert City, Iowa, moving to Cedar Rapids as a teen. He graduated from the old Washington High School in 1934.
Galyn was united in marriage to Ruth Talbott on Aug. 6, 1939, in Cedar Rapids. Four sons were born to this union. Galyn's love of flying helped him to pursue his instructor's license. He served in the Navy training pilots during World War II. Most of his career following the war, was spent in the family business, A.W. Peterson Furniture Co.
Galyn and his wife, Ruth, enjoyed traveling to many states, Mexico and Canada, in their motor home. They spent many winters in Florida. Galyn was an avid reader, golfer, and gardener. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved the Lord and enjoyed his years at New Covenant Bible Church, where he was a charter member, served on the Elder Board, and volunteered for projects at church as well as at St. Luke's Hospital.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Ruth; son, Mark (died April 29, 2013); daughter-in-law, Debra; granddaughter, Lindsay; a brother, Allan; and a sister, Doris.
He is survived by his sons, Kent (Marilyn) Peterson of West Union, Jim (Lois) Peterson of Charles Town, W.Va., and Joel Peterson of Venice, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ione (Jack) McKay; special friend, Jean Bauer; and many cousins and friends.
Peace to his memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to New Covenant Bible Church.
