Petersen, Douglas Earl
Douglas Earl Petersen, 68, of Springville, died of cancer Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012.
Survivors include two sons, Colyn Petersen of Omaha, Neb., and Scott Petersen of Cedar Rapids; four brothers, Loyd (Betty) Petersen of Anamosa, Paul (Neena) Petersen of Manchester, Richard (Bonnie) Petersen of Martelle and Dewey (Beckie) Petersen of Ely; a sister, Lorene Hartwig of Anamosa; and a grandchild, Samuel Petersen of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Velma June Collins; a brother, Fred Petersen; and a sister, Helen Petersen, who died in infancy.
Doug was born Feb. 6, 1944, in Anamosa, Iowa, a son of Dewey A. and Nellie M. (Hurt) Petersen. He graduated from the Martelle High School in 1961. He served active duty for four years in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1965; with zero time lost, he was recommended for re-enlistment. He married Barbara Stoner of Oelwein; they divorced in 1983. Doug worked for Rockwell Collins for 38 years in production, retiring in 2003.
Doug was a very even tempered man who never brought harm to anyone. He had a high moral standard and treated everyone with respect. No matter what their beliefs were, he would not judge them.
In his retirement years his passion was golfing at the Fawn Creek Country Club near Anamosa. He golfed every day possible. His secondary interests were television, movies and crossword puzzles. In his earlier years he enjoyed mushroom hunting, camping with family and friends and fast cars.
Per Doug's request there will be no funeral service or viewing. His wish was to have a wake at his son's home in Cedar Rapids, which will be Saturday, Oct. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. RSVP to dougswake@gmail.com for a map to the wake or call (319) 329-6336 and leave a message for directions.
