Peters, Helen
Helen Peters, 91, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, from heath complications at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. The Rev. Darryl Larson will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. Thoughts, memories and condolences may be left at . In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Surviving are two children, Susan (Ron) Rumsey, Horace, N.D., and Donald (Janell) Peters, Monticello; three grandchildren, Sarah, Anna. and Paul; two great-grandchildren, Telsha and Jastin; and a brother, William Owens, Wamego, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; a granddaughter, Rebecca; and two brothers, George and Charlie.
Cora Helen Peters was born Nov. 17, 1922, in Wamego, Kan. She was the daughter of Alva and Sarah Domeny Owens. She graduated from the Wamego High School. Helen then worked at the Wamego Telephone Company as an operator and the bookkeeper. It was at a USO dance that she met her future husband, Raymond Peters, who was an Iowa soldier stationed at Fort Riley, Kan. The couple married on Aug. 1, 1948, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Monticello. Helen worked as a clerk in the Western Auto Store for a brief time. For 22 years, the majority of her working career, Helen was secretary to the principal of the Monticello Schools. She retired in 1982.
Helen was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and the Ruth Circle. In her retirement she spent her time working at the church, sewing quilts and spending time with family and friends.
