Penny Kaye (Hamlett) Sands, 64, of Delhi, Iowa, died Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 2 - 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester, Iowa. A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Christ Community Church in Manchester. Inurnment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester.
Penny was born April 4, 1960, in Manchester, the daughter of Chester D. “Delano” and Etta Marie (Timmerman) Hamlett. She graduated from West Delaware High School. Penny met Gary Sands and they were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Manchester on June 23, 1979; three children were brought of this marriage: Susan Marie, Mitchell Elias, and Stephanie Lee. Penny pursued her education at Kirkwood Community College, earning an AA in sign language communication. She continued her academic journey at Upper Iowa University, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Special Education K-6th. In 2003, she achieved her master’s degree in Special Education. Penny’s career in education began as a substitute teacher and extended through roles at Hillcrest Behavior Disorders in Monticello, Iowa, Sacred Heart School in Oelwein, Iowa, and culminated at St. Athanasius School in Jesup, Iowa, before retiring due to health reasons. Penny enjoyed running after her grandsons and watching their various sporting events.
Penny is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gary Sands of Delhi; daughter, Susan Crippen of Delhi; son, Mitchell Sands (Tamara Kroeger) of New Baden, Illinois; three grandchildren, Tyreese Crippen (Shea Burcham), Carver Crippen, and Nyle Crippen; four step-grandchildren, Leigha Kroeger, Robert Kroeger, Delilah Kroeger, and Remington Carter; brother, Kevin (Tammy “Autumn”) Hamlett of Delhi; aunt, Roberta Weis of Manchester; and uncle, Bryce (Jeanette) Hamlett of Edgewood, Iowa.
Penny is preceded in death by her daughter, Stephanie Lee Sands; parents, Chester and Etta Hamlett; maternal grandparents, Alfred and Ethel Timmerman; and paternal grandparents, Thomas Hamlett & Alta Hamlett.
Memorials may be directed to Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars through F&M Bank in Manchester.
