Pennington, LaVerne Oliver
LaVerne Oliver Pennington, 70, of Lake Alfred, Fla., formerly of North Liberty, passed away from a sudden illness Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Winter Haven Hospital. Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Monday, June 21, at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Inurnment will follow in Morse Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon. LaVerne was born Aug. 22, 1939, in Iowa City, the son of Oliver and Adelaide (Mekota) Pennington. He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1957. He served in the Air Force from 1957 until 1962. He spent many years in the auto parts business in the Iowa City/Coralville area. LaVerne enjoyed airplanes, fishing, spending time with his family and friends, and cheering on the Cubs and Bears. He also loved playing his bass guitar in country western dance bands and the church praise bands.
LaVerne is survived by his wife, Marlene (Osweiler) Pennington; his eight children, Ben (Barb) Pennington of Bettendorf, Vickie (Don) Jarvis of Santa Clara, Calif., Phillip Sieren, Karen (Steve) Hamer of West Branch, Bob (Mart) Sieren of Iowa City, Barb (Rob) Hamer of Tipton, Doug Sieren of Iowa City and Nancy (Scott) Wilson of North Liberty; a daughter-in-law, Sue Sieren of Durant; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Pauline (Richard) Kern of Arkansas and Lorraine Porter and sister-in-law, Marilyn Pennington, both of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adelaide (Mekota) and Oliver Pennington, and his brother, David.
