Peggy Ann Vercande passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at English Valley Care Center, at the age of 93. Her long life was a blessing to many.
Peggy was born on August 14, 1932, in Dayton, Virginia, to William Forrest and Bessie Jane (Mongold) Swartz. She grew up in the Shenandoah Valley and moved to North English as a teenager in 1949. Peggy graduated from North English High School in 1951. On November 7, 1952, Peggy married the love of her life, Eldon Leroy Vercande, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Their seventy-three-year marriage showed their devotion, faith, and love for family.
Peggy especially treasured time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed baking, gardening, canning, sewing, traveling, and golf.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Eldon and their eight children: Deborah Underwood of Coralville, Jane Osweiler of Conroy, Annette (Gary) Boland of Williamsburg, Susie (Ed) Bullard, Brenda Hooper, Nancy (Scott) Wilkerson, all of North English, Daniel (Pam) Vercande of Kinross, and Brian Vercande of Williamsburg. She also leaves behind thirty grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a sister, Jean (Bobbie) Minnich of Dayton, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons-in-law, Jeffery Hooper and Loras Osweiler, and five siblings: Evelyn Willett, Donald Swartz (infant), Paul Swartz, Valley Keplinger, and Bonnie Skelton.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Burial will follow at Sorden Cemetery near Webster. Visitation is Friday, January 2, 2026, at Powell Funeral Home in North English from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
