Paulson, Robert 'Bob' Louis
Robert (Bob) Louis Paulson passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at Jones Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at a later date.
Robert Louis Paulson was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on July 14, 1925, to Ulrich (Paul) and Wilma (McGuire) Paulson. Bob was raised in the Morley/Olin area by his uncle, Leslie McGuire and his grandmother, Minnie McGuire. Bob attended Olin Consolidated School graduating with honors in May 1943. In January 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served until April 1946.
On Feb. 14, 1946, he was united in marriage with Elnora (Elie) Mae Zimmerman at St. John's Lutheran Church in Olin, Iowa. After his discharge from the army, they returned to Chicago, to help his mother manage the rooming houses she owned. Bob also worked for the railroad for a few years. In 1951, the family moved to a farm in rural Olin, where Bob raised his family and resided until his death. In 1964, he sold the cows, rented the farm and worked as a custodian for Linn-Mar Schools in Marion, retiring in 1987.
Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid card player (long live the Ace of Hearts). His greatest love was bowling. He bowled at numerous state and national tournaments and was inducted into the National and local Bowling Hall of Fame. Macular degeneration didn't stop him from bowling. His teammates would tell him which pins were left and by memory he would throw the ball toward those pins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; an adopted sister, Barbara (Taddeucci) Paulson Wenthold; and great granddaughter, Mikayla Grace Weimer.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Elie; children, Shirley (Darrell) Kading of Omaha, Neb., Denis (Barb) Paulson of Olin, and Sherry (Mike) McGreevy of Anamosa; grandchildren, Lisa (Pedro) Ferrer, Glen (Doris) Kading, Rob (Heather) Paulson, Denise (T.J.) Nealson, Michelle (Derek) Weimer and Jon McGreevy; 16 great-grandchildren, Sofia, Cecilia and Fernando Ferrer, Duncan, Sariah, Connor and Gavin Kading, Chandler and Maggie Paulson, Tyler and Alex Nealson, Kollyn, Elizabeth and Dru Weimer and Ava and Chloe McGreevy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorials may be sent to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Olin Ambulance Service, Olin, Iowa.
Thoughts, memories and condolences may be sent to 9262 148th Ave., Olin, IA 52320.
