Pauline (Sanders) Schirm, 96, died Sunday, May 7, 2017, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 12, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday also at the church. Interment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church or the Brazil Christian Mission. Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline was born Feb. 22, 1921, in rural Benton County, to Claude and Fanny (Nabholz) Sanders. She graduated from Lincoln High School and attended normal training and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. Pauline was united in marriage to Vernon W. Schirm on Sept. 5, 1942, in Little Rock, Ark. She and her husband farmed in the Vinton area for many years. Vernon preceded her in death on June 11, 1986.

Pauline was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. She enjoyed playing cards with her many card clubs, especially bridge. Pauline enjoyed going dancing in area dances as well as visiting her family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Terry (Diane) Schirm of Zionsville, Ind.; her daughter, Linda (Steve) Abernathey of Newhall; her grandchildren, Corena (Kenny) Ealy, Jeff (Andrea) Abernathey, Chip (Kelly) Abernathey and Ryan (Tasha) Schirm; her great-grandchildren, Damian (Cassi), Elizabeth, Kamryn, Emily, Keegan, Castor, Skylar, Aiden, Braelan, Greysen, Reed and Rowen; her great-great-grandson, Jaxton; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Pauline was preceded in death by her three brothers.
