PAULINE E. JOHNSTONE
Cedar Rapids
Pauline E. Johnstone, 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. For the past three years, she had resided at Manor Care Health Services in Cedar Rapids.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, with Chaplain Major Barbara Logan.
Pauline was born Nov. 15, 1935, in Iowa City, to William L. and May Francis (White) McMurrin. She was the sister to eight brothers.
Pauline married Glenn Johnstone on July 8, 1954. They made their home in the Rompot neighborhood in southeast Cedar Rapids and raised five sons. She was widowed in 1971 and continued to be a devoted, loving mother to her sons.
Pauline was called the "Mother of Rompot." All the neighborhood kids congregated at her home. She loved to cook and enjoyed sharing whatever she was fixing.
Music, games, visiting with friends and sitting outside gave her joy.
She was a survivor; losing her home to the 2008 flood displaced her from the neighborhood that she knew as "home" all of her life. She moved her family to a small apartment and resided there until she moved to Manor Care in 2013.
Those left to cherish her memories are her sons, Lynn, Nathan (Nina) and Aaron Johnstone; and her brothers, Dwayne (Sharon), Roger and Robert (Joyce) McMurrin, and their families.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; her sons, Delane and Dwight Johnstone; and brothers, Wilbur, Donald, Neal, Albert and Norman McMurrin.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her honor, and may be directed to Suzanne Dostal.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under Obituaries.
