Paula M. Rickels, 68, of Scotch Grove, died Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Scotch Grove, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello. The Rev. Donald Krause will officiate.
Paula was born Dec. 26, 1945, the daughter of Clifford and Gladys (Barta) Wears. She graduated from Monticello High School with the class of 1964 and married Larry Rickels in the same year on Feb. 28, at St. John Lutheran Church in Scotch Grove. She and Larry moved to Texas during Larry's military service. When they returned, Paula had a variety of occupations including farming, drilling computer boards at Riddles, driving a school bus and at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was known for her infectious and distinguishable laughter. Paula was an active supporter of Compassion International, Four Oaks and Exchange Student Programs. She and Larry had many fun times farming, camping and floating the river. Most importantly, Paula loved her family and creating joy.
Survivors include three sons, Brian (Stephanie) Rickels of Bernard, Jason Rickels of Scotch Grove and Jeremy (JoLee) Rickels of Scotch Grove; one daughter, Lisa Barta of Lisbon; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and another great-grandchild expected in July; her father, Clifford Wears of Venice, Fla.; two sisters, Carolann Fairchild of Ankeny and Ramunda Wears of Deltona, Fla.; and a brother, William Wears of Marshalltown.
Paula was preceded in death by her mother,
Gladys; and her husband, Larry.
A memorial has been
established in Paula's
memory.
