Paul L. Troyer, 94, of Kalona, died Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Pleasantview Home in Kalona. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, rural Kalona, with Pastors Don Patterson and Steve Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, June 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.
A memorial fund has been established for the Lower Deer Creek Kitchen Fund and Iowa City Hospice.
Paul Lamont Troyer was born Feb. 20, 1923, in rural Kalona, the son of Chris and Cora (Miller) Troyer. He graduated from Brush No. 8 Rural School. Paul was baptized in Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church on March 29, 1936, and remained a member until his death.
He served in the Civilian Public Service for the Mennonite Central Committee from March 8, 1944, to July 18, 1946, in Denison, Iowa. On May 6, 1947, he was united in marriage to Arlene M. Swartzendruber at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland.
Paul was a farmer and also drove a milk truck for Twin County Dairy, made and delivered ice cream and owned and operated Troyer Trucking. He was an Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Survivors include four children and spouses, Gordon (Juanita) Troyer of Kalona, Maxine (Duane) Mast of Kalona, Kenny (Kate) Troyer of Solon and Debra (David) Stannard of Coralville; seven grandchildren, Diane (Jay) Chapman, Rob Mast, Andrea, Patrick and Christopher (Jody) Troyer, Nicholas and Emily Troyer; three great- grandchildren, Collin, Noah and Ben; seven siblings, Wilbur (Nadene) Troyer of Nampa, Idaho, Wava (Ray) Reschly of Kalona, Don (Phyllis) Troyer of Nampa, Idaho, John Troyer of Houston, Texas, Carolyn (Vern) Vaandrager of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mary Troyer (Dick Means) of Riverside and Keith (Linda) Troyer of Kalona; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Troyer of Blue Grass.
Preceding Paul in death were his parents; his wife, Arlene, on Oct. 25, 2013; two brothers, Cleo (Fern) Troyer and Harold Troyer; two sisters, Marjorie Troyer and Lois (Neil) Birky; two sisters-in-law, Fannie and Joanna Troyer.
