Paul E. Shaughnessy, 88, of Cedar Rapids passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
One of 12 children, Paul Edward Shaughnessy was born Aug. 8, 1926, into the Irish-Catholic family of John and Anna (Spang) Shaughnessy in Rochester, Pa. Paul was united in marriage to Mary Ann Butz on Aug. 25, 1951, in Springdale, Pa.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann; daughters, Kathy (Jon) Waggoner of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Nancee (Kerry) Mounce of Bentonville, Ark., Susie (Jeff) Fox of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Peggy (Chris) Littlefield of Waukee.
"Grandpa Paul" loved his 12 grandchildren, Ryan Waggoner, Nick (Genny), Mary Beth (Dominic), Paul and Mallory (Daniel) Mounce, Morgan (Brad), Elle, Annie and Maddie Fox, Connor, Carlie and Cade Littlefield. He also cherished his 6 great-grandchildren, Charlie, Molly, Duce, Dyson, Dash and Madilyn. He is survived by his siblings, Father Angelus Shaughnessy O.F.M. Cap of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jean McVeigh of Pompano Beach, Fla., Bernadette Higgins of New York and Bernard Shaughnessy of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Mary Elizabeth Roth, Sister Cecilia Shaughnessy, Father Sigmund Shaughnessy O.F.M. Cap, Irene Murray, twin sister, Pauline Cucinelli, Joseph Shaughnessy and Josephine Laman.
After graduating from St. Vincent Prep School in Latrobe, Pa., he proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from St. Vincent College with a major in history where he was an outstanding student and athlete. Paul began his career in personnel but soon realized his passion was in sales. He had his own business and spent his career selling in the soft drink industry. Paul's interests and hobbies included golf, bridge, pool and checkers. The things most important to Paul were his family, faith and friends. Paul's kindness, generosity and blue eyes will be remembered forever.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a rosary beginning at 3 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday with a visitation beginning at 1 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church with the Rev. Angelus Shaughnessy officiating. Co-celebrants will be the Rev. Phil Thompson and the Rev. John Higgins. Private family entombment.
