Paul "Paulie" Pospisil, 90,

of Mount Vernon, died peacefully Sunday, July 7, 2019, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church by the Rev. Andrew Awotwe-Mensah. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Private family burial: Mount Vernon Cemetery. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon, is caring for Paul and his family.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Leota; daughters, Kelly Pospisil of Cedar Rapids, Lisa (Dan) Wright of Arlington, Kimberly (Bud) Holiga of Springboro, Ohio, and Andrea (Dan) House of Sigourney; grandchildren, Tayler and Griffin Holiga and Luke and Ben House; sister, Betty Wolfe of Mount Vernon; and sister-in-law, Clara Pospisil of Mount Vernon.

Paul Leo Pospisil was born June 28, 1929, in Cedar Rapids to Joseph and Mary (Drahos) Pospisil. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1947 and married Leota Staskal at St. John's Catholic Church in Mount Vernon on Sept. 20, 1956. They resided in rural Mount Vernon most of their married lives, and in their winter home in Dunnellon, Fla., after his retirement in 1991.

Paulie farmed all his life and was a pioneer in developing minimum tillage farming with his sidewinder. He earned first place in 1976, and second place in 1977, in the Iowa Master Corn Growers yield contest in Linn County. He served for six years in the Army National Guard, 109th Medical Company, Iowa City. Paul and his family were lifelong members of St. John's Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, where he also served on the building committee.

Paul was a fun loving jokester with a great sense of humor, considered by his many friends to be the life of the party in his day. He was also quite the daredevil performing dangerous stunts in his airplane and recklessly skiing behind cars, and would pull the tablecloth from under the table after an evening of eating out with friends. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan fond of hollering "Go Hawks!" He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, occasionally bringing baby bunnies home from the field in his shirt pocket for his daughters. His family was his joy and he'll be fiercely missed. Soar like an eagle Paulie!

Preceding Paul in death were his parents; three brothers, Philip, Joseph "Bub" and Robert; and five sisters, Eleanor Biderman, Mary Russell, Agnes Biderman, Stella Mallie and Helen Bader.
