Paul G. Vislisel, 88, of
rural Cedar Rapids, passed peacefully at home under the care of his family and
Hospice of Mercy on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Father Dennis Conway. Burial will follow at
Campbell Cemetery, rural Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE, and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A rosary will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Paul is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; children, Steve (Tammy) of Mount Vernon, Al (Lucy) of Lisbon, Dan of rural Cedar Rapids, Tony (Steph) of Bertram, Andy (Jen) of Urbana, Sandy (Dave) Ruhs of West Des Moines and Annette (Mark) Carder of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ann (Al) Pavik of Granite Bay, Calif., and Suzy Rittgers of Cedar Falls; and a brother-in-law, Bill (Leona Smith) Faoro of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Vlasta "Lottie" (Fajmon) Vislisel; his sister, Alice Faoro; and brother-in-law, Larry Rittgers.
Paul was born Sept. 19, 1933, at home in rural Bertram, as the oldest child of George and Vlasta Vislisel and was raised on the family farm near Bertram which he lovingly farmed his entire life. He attended country schools near Bertram through the eighth grade and then graduated from Mount Vernon High School. Paul married Shirley A. Meskimen on June 11, 1957, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and they raised seven children. In addition to farming, Paul worked as a rural mail carrier for 19 years.
In later years, Paul graduated with an Associate degree in Agricultural Science from Kirkwood Community College.
Paul served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, one of those years being overseas in Germany and France as heavy equipment transport.
He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He was also a member of Marion American Legion Post 298 and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Paul loved to fish and hunt and passed that love on to multiple kids and grandkids.
Paul's family would especially like to thank the Mount Vernon Fire Department and EMTs for their support.
Military graveside services will be conducted by Marion American Legion Post 298.
A memorial fund has been established.
