PATRICK JOSEPH AYERS
Iowa City
Patrick Joseph Ayers, 70, passed away at his Iowa City home, in the early morning
of Friday, April 16, 2021, after a year-long struggle with cancer. His family was by
his side.
The family will greet friends on the back porch at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, on Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the Patrick Ayers memorial fund has been established.
Patrick was born on July 12, 1950, in Clinton, Iowa. A farm kid and altar boy, he married Linda Wilson in 1974 and started a family. After a brief stay in Arizona, he settled in Iowa City, where he worked as a carpenter and handyman for the rest of his life. Whether working for himself as Ayers Carpentry, for Sears, or for Frantz Construction, he always took pride in doing good, quality work for an honest price. He loved NASCAR (when a Ford won), Hawkeye football, a good cup of coffee, and enjoying pancakes with his kids and grandkids. But he was happiest when helping his family with a project, whether building, remodeling, or fixing something around the house. If he knew how to do the job, it would be done well; if he didn't know, he would learn. "I'm just happy to be able to do it for you," he would say. And he meant it.
He is survived by three sons, Michael Ayers (Jen Teitle), Steven (Rachel) Ayers and Ezekiel Ayers (Merissa Fussell); six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jack, Riona, Zelda, Yvaine and Benjamin; and his three siblings, Jim (Joyce) Ayers, Mary (Larry) Stebbins and Mark (Rita) Ayers. He is also survived by his dear friend, Linda Ayers-Foster (Mike Foster), who helped him with so much in the past year: transportation to infusions, communication with doctors and companionship through his final days and hours. He was loved, and will be missed, by so many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Louise Ayers; his son, Daniel Ayers; and his two daughters, Josie Ayers and Gena Ayers.
The family would like to thank Mercy Cancer Care and Iowa City Hospice.
