Patrick D. Callahan, 75, of Alburnett, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, surrounded by his family, under the care of St. Luke’s Hospice. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, 2023, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion, Iowa, with a Scripture Service beginning at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Central City, Iowa, with Rev. Sean Smith officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Mount Clark Cemetery in Central City.
Patrick was born on July 18, 1948, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Lloyd Daniel and Dorothy Edna (Burns) Callahan. He was a 1966 graduate of Starmont High School and went on to attend Kirkwood Community College. Patrick served honorably in the United States Army. On Sept. 21, 1974, Patrick was united in marriage to Mary Peterson at St. Patrick’s Church in Winthrop, Iowa. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and a troop leader of the Boy Scouts of America, earning a Silver Beaver Award for leadership merit. Patrick worked as a mechanic for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed all kinds of auto racing, but most of all he enjoyed his kids and grandkids. Patrick will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Patrick is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Mary; children, Jason (Missy) Callahan of Alburnett, Brian Callahan of Alburnett, Doug (Kari) Callahan of Urbana, Iowa, and Laura (Matt) Banes of Alburnett; grandchildren, Jordyn (Payton) and their son Granger, Reed, Justice, Taylor, Sawyer, Finn, Torvi, Emma, Haylee, Becca, and Trevor; his bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Chase (Brittany), Alex (Kaitlin) and their children, Oliver, Violet, and Wyatt (Tiffany) and her daughter, Anna; siblings, Coleen (Dave) Sperfslage, Celia (Jim) Peterson, and Jim (Dawn) Callahan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Mike Callahan.
