Patricia was born March 21, 1931, in Nichols, Iowa, the daughter of John and Louise (Healy) Kaalberg. Graduating from Nichols High School, Patricia moved to the Iowa City area in 1958. She married Ronald Matthews on Sept. 10, 1952, in Nichols. Ronald and Patricia lived for a short time in West Liberty.
She began working after high school at West Liberty State Bank and later at First National Bank in downtown Iowa City. Patricia worked at the Johnson County Assessor's Office from 1978 to 1993 and was a secretary/bookkeeper at Downes & Associates in Iowa City from 1995 until her retirement in 2015.
She was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Church, Altar & Rosary Society and served as a volunteer with Iowa City Mercy Hospital Guild. Some of her favorite and treasured things were attending Hawkeye football games with friends and their bridge games – more than 40 years of them! Family vacations also ranked high on the favorite's list.
Patricia is survived by her son, Douglas Matthews of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Erin (Dave Chambers) and their son, Beckham, of Grain Valley, Mo., and Hope Matthews of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Carol Matthews; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Barb Homewood of Iowa City.
