Patricia Jean Layton, 93 of the Meth-Wick Community passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Private burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Teahen Funeral Home and Cremation Services is caring for Patricia and her family.
Patricia is survived by her two children, John (Denise) Layton of Marion and Susan (Dan) Qualls of Norton Shores, MI; three grandchildren, Jason Layton, Valerie (Mark) Benham, and Paige (Jordan) Breen; two great-grandchildren, Luke Benham and Oliver Breen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Beryl.
Patricia was born on April 26, 1931, in Vinton, the daughter of Harry Carl and Vera Everett Kray. She attended country school in Eden Township, Benton County, and graduated from Washington High School, Vinton in 1949. Patricia graduated with the Centennial class from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon in 1953. She worked as a teacher in Blue Island, IL, and in Dubuque, and as a substitute teacher in the Shellsburg and Cedar Rapids school districts. Later, Patricia worked for 15 years as a sales associate for Armstrong’s department store; then, as a cashier at Bezdek’s Garden Center, and part-time at the Linn County Auditor’s Office during elections.
Patricia was a 64-year member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, joining in 1960, and a member of Chapter LI of P.E.O. joining in 1949, marking 75 years of membership. Additionally, she was involved with Audubon, The Good Earth Garden Club, served as a Master Gardener, and volunteered with NOMADS, a missions group. Since 1993, she and her husband Beryl worked 35 NOMADS projects. Also for 12 years they sold tickets for the Iowa State Fair horse shows.
