Patricia Ellen Pope Yamada, 79, a beloved member of the Iowa City community, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2025, surrounded by family. Born on August 21, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, Patti lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service.
Patti's joyful childhood was shared with her three brothers and many cousins. She would often dance on tables at her parents' café, embodying a lively spirit and strong work ethic. She graduated from Briar Cliff College with a degree in social work.
As a social worker in Kansas City, Patti passionately served others and met her husband, Thoru Yamada, a neurologist. She admired the Department of Neurology and enjoyed their life together. Patti's dedication to helping others was driven by her deep faith and belief in serving God.
Her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. Patti was a devoted mother and grandmother, actively involved in their lives and school events. She supported her husband in his career, forming a partnership marked by love and community commitment.
Known for her vibrant personality and love of hosting parties, Patti had a knack for bringing people together. Her gatherings showcased her generosity and zest for life. She shared her famous Chinese Chicken Salad at community events and supported local businesses and organizations.
Patti is survived by her husband Thoru; her children Pope (Darcie) Yamada and Torrii (Will) Yamada Dretsch; her grandchildren, Kirin and Raiden; her siblings, Frank (Elizabeth) Pope and Patrick Pope; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter Sora Jo, her brother Joseph Pope, and sister-in-law Jeanne Pope.
Mass for Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 4:30-6:30 pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with a Rosary at 4 pm. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Iowa City Children’s Museum, the Oaknoll Foundation, and Iowa City Hospice in Patti’s name, honoring her lifelong dedication to community service.
