PATRICIA CARTER
Iowa City
Patricia Ruth (Fairchild) Carter, 84, of Iowa City, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
She was born Jan. 4, 1930, in rural western Michigan, the daughter of Horace Graham and Anna Mary Fairchild. She graduated from Ravenna High School with the class of 1948. On Aug. 22, 1948, she was united in marriage to Richard Carter in Ra-venna. Pat worked at General Telephone Co., later GTE, for 46 years and retired in 1990.
Pat was a lifelong lover of animals, caring for pets on the farm, feeding ducks in the backyard of her condo and even teaching an abandoned baby robin how to fly. She kept up with current events through avid following of newspapers and televised news.
After moving from Fort Wayne, Ind., to Iowa City upon her retirement, Pat loved spending time with her grandsons, with her home serving as a favorite after-school hangout spot. Every holiday, her family looked forward to her homemade fudge, rolls, cranberry sauce and other goodies.
Pat is survived by her daughter, Carol Alexander of Iowa City; her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Dr. Zack and Stephanie Alexander, and grandchildren, Isaac, Ian and Ingrid Alexander of Newton; and her grandson and grand-daughter-in-law, Drs. Erik and Anne Alexander of Milwaukee, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband.
The family will have a private celebration of life.
Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Humane Society of the United States.
