Parlyn Matthew Plotz was born June 7, 1928, in Homestead, Iowa, the son of Rudolph and Elizabeth (McGuire) Plotz. Parlyn served in the United States Army from 1950-1951. Parlyn was united in marriage to Helen Ballard on June 13, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. He worked at Wilson’s in Cedar Rapids, Davies Feed Store in Marengo, delivered Pioneer Seed and was a farmer. Parlyn’s greatest joy was being on the farm. In his younger years he and Helen would go dancing. He enjoyed custom tiling gardens for people for 20 years and mowing. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Marengo American Legion. Parlyn died Friday, June 20, 2025, at Compass Memorial Hospital in Marengo at the age of 97 years.
He is survived by his wife; son Mark (Teresa) Plotz; daughter Lisa Costigan all of Marengo; granddaughter Megan Plotz of Cedar Rapids; grandson Casey Costigan of Marengo; many nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law Richard Ballard. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Plotz; brothers, Leo, Melvin, Jerry, John, Eldred and infant brother Thomas, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A Funeral Mass Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. Visitation will be held Monday, June 30, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Marengo. Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery. A general memorial fund has been established.
