On Nov. 12, 1976, he married Vickie Lea Cornwell at the Toddville Free Methodist Church in Toddville. He retired after twenty-eight years with the City of Cedar Rapids Water Department. Following retirement, he and Vickie wintered in Arkansas where Sonny worked with his son Brandon.
Going to car shows, camping, taking road trips and what he referred to as "Scuffing Around" were a few of Sonny's favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed collecting die-cast muscle cars and tractors as well as mowing and maintaining the yard. Above all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, talking and telling stories. Sonny was also a man of many talents. He could build, manufacture, or repair almost anything and enjoyed teaching and doing things for others.
