OLGA SADLICK
Cedar Rapids
Olga Sadlick of Cedar Rapids died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at the age of 93. She was a resident of The Meth-Wick Community/ Manor.
Olga was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Hamtramck, Mich. (Detroit suburb), to Leona and Alexander Sadlick. At a young age, she moved with her parents and sister, Wanda, to Iowa, where she graduated from Davenport High School in 1938. Olga worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for 35 years, predominately as secretary to the commanding officer. It was a position that required expert organization and people skills -- and she certainly excelled in both. She retired at age 55.
Olga traveled extensively with family and friends to destinations including Venezuela, South America, the United Kingdom, Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada. She loved to drive and enjoyed trips to the East Coast, Florida and California. She could recount minute details of her many travels. When her travel days were behind her, Olga enjoyed the next phase of her life and "bloomed where she was planted."
She was an avid reader and could converse about anything with absolutely anyone to her final days. She completed the New York Times crossword puzzles using only a dictionary. She was the perfect example of how we would want to live our lives and positively impact others. Her selflessness and interest in the world and others was legendary and she uplifted all who knew her.
Olga was a truly positive role model for her
family.
She is survived by her nephew, Gary Kakert of California; her niece, Chris Kakert Madsen (Erik) of Cedar Rapids; and her great-nieces, Kelsey and Haley Madsen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leona and Alexander Sadlick; her sister, Wanda Kakert (Howard); and her beloved canine companion, Poogan.
She had great affection and appreciation for the wonderful caregivers and staff at Meth-Wick during her nine years there and was very grateful for the Hospice of Mercy care-givers as well during her
final days.
Olga was a small woman with a powerful spirit and she will be dearly missed and remembered.
Memorial donations in Olga's name may be directed to The Meth-Wick Community.
