Olberding, Ronald L.
Ronald L. Olberding, 69, of Dyersville, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, in Mesa, Ariz., from complications of Parkinson's disease. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, where a parish Scripture service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert Gross.
Ron was born Oct. 26, 1941, in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Aloysius and Dorothy (Klostermann) Olberding. He married Joyce Meyer on May 18, 1963, in Dyersville. Ron owned and operated Payless Foods in Dyersville until he retired in 2003. He was an active member of the Iowa Grocers Association. After retirement, Ron and Joyce spent winters in Mesa, Ariz., where they enjoyed their favorite pastimes of golf, playing cards, socializing and making friends.
Ron was a dedicated family man, businessman, and friend to many. He was a wonderful dad, grandpa, brother, son and friend.
As an avid golfer, he was a lifelong member of the Dyersville Country Club and a member of the Fountain of the Sun Country Club in Mesa, Ariz. He served on the American Trust and Savings Bank board, and the St. Francis Xavier finance and school boards. Ron was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville and St. George Catholic Church in Apache Junction, Ariz. He was a generous supporter of Catholic education in the Xavier/Beckman community.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; four children, Dave (Nancy) of Cedar Rapids, Tom (Teena) of St. Simons Island, Ga., Joni (Brent) Hinerichsen of Ankeny and Karla (Mark) Guastaferro of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Stephanie, Sarah, Lisa, Amy and Michael Olberding, Emily Olberding, Sean and Grace Hinerichsen and Andrew Guastaferro; his mother, Dorothy Olberding of Dyersville; siblings, Lois (Merlin) Kramer of Dubuque, Linda Trosky of Cedar Rapids, JoAnn (Chuck) Olson of Dubuque, Bob (Carolyn) of Dyersville, Elaine (Mark) Miller of Norway, Iowa, Marian (Mark) Hayes of Mendota Heights, Minn., LuAnn (Jim) Most of Wildwood, Mo., and Larry (JoAnn) of Dyersville; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Donald (Helen) Meyer, Jim (Sheila) Meyer, Ken (Kathy) Meyer, Betty (Stan) McLane, Patricia Meyer and Dorothy Meyer, all of Dyersville, Mary Jane (Harry) Steger of Elkport and Janice (Ron) Alfred of Ames; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Allie, in 1963; his parents-in-law, Leo and Loretta Meyer; and brothers-and-sister-in-law, Loras Meyer, Dick Meyer, and John and Anne Meyer, both in infancy.
Memorials are preferred.
