Ohl, LaVerne 'Pops'
"Pops" Ohl
LaVerne "Pops" Ohl, 80, of Hopkinton, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, while undergoing aneurysm repair. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his daughter, Pat (Al) Dettbarn of Hopkinton; two granddaughters, Cortney Mohr and Brittany Mohr; two stepgranddaughters, Jennifer Dettbarn and Michelle Dettbarn; his siblings, Letha, Leo (LaDonna) and Lorraine, all of Washington state; a brother-in-law, Casey of Washington state; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene; a sister, Lucille; and three brothers, Lawrence, Lewis and Lester.
LaVerne was born Dec. 5, 1928, the son of James and Wyla Ohl, in Fairbank, Iowa. A graduate from Oelwein High School, he served his country during the Korean conflict with the United States Army. On May 4, 1957, LaVerne was united in marriage to Arlene Kessler in Marion. She died Aug. 3, 1999. He worked at REA for 19 years and later with the City of Cedar Rapids in the sidewalk maintenance department.
LaVerne enjoyed fishing, working crossword puzzles and wildlife, especially Baily and Rizzo. He liked to play cards and bingo and go to the dog track. LaVerne was a curious individual who never had anything bad to say about anyone and he also liked to humor people.
