Oehl, Raymond H.
Raymond H. Oehl, 81, of Amana, died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at his home. Funeral services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Main Amana Church, Amana, with Elder Alan Trumpold officiating. Burial will be in Amana Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Main Amana Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Raymond is survived by his daughters, Catherine Oehl (special friend, William R. Jasper) of Amana and Karen Phelps (Marc) of Upper South Amana; two stepgrandchildren, Justin Phelps (Erin) of Upper South Amana and Dawn Ball (Ian) of Iowa City; a brother, Carl Oehl of Amana, a sister-in-law, Emily Oehl of Amana; four nieces and two nephews. Also surviving are numerous furry four-legged grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice, on Jan. 23, 1997; a brother, R. Fred in 1987; and a sister-in-law, Fern Oehl in 2009.
Raymond Henry Oehl was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Amana, Iowa, the youngest son of Fred Oehl Sr. and Helena Hergert Oehl. He attended the Amana schools and graduated from Amana High School in 1948. He was united in marriage to Alice Geyer on Aug. 9, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Raymond served in the U.S. Marines, receiving his basic training at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, Calif. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves, with a total of 47 years of service. Raymond served his country stateside at the Pentagon in Army Intelligence during the Vietnam conflict. He retired in 1996 as a Master Sergeant E-8.
Raymond was employed by Oehl Plumbing and Heating as a plumber and electrician. He then worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City in the HVAC department, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of the Amana Volunteer Fire Department for 44 years. Ray loved fishing, camping, hunting and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed horseshoes and playing cards. He spent many hours tinkering in his shop. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at his home.
A memorial fund has been established.
