Oberbroeckling, Donald
Donald Oberbroeckling, 81, of Garnavillo, died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Garnavillo. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 001 S. Industrial Park Rd., Garnavillo, and one hour before services Tuesday at the church.
He was born June 12, 1929, in New Vienna, the son of Alphons and Anastasia (Lansing) Oberbroeckling. Don received his education form St. Boniface Catholic School in New Vienna. On Aug. 15, 1951, he entered the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge on May 14, 1953. During that time in the Army, Donald was united in marriage with Charlotte Krogman on Jan. 29, 1952, at St. Mary's Church in Guttenberg. Four children were born from that union. After his discharge, Donald worked for the Silver Streak Plow Co. in Dyersville. He moved to Guttenberg and farmed for a while before buying a farm in Garnavillo and moving there in 1959. Over the next several years, Don farmed with his wife and kids.
During that time he served on the St. Joseph school board. He also served as president of the Garnavillo school board. He was active with the Farm Bureau and even served on the board of directors. Donald was on the Fair Board for over 25 years and served as treasurer for all those years and was a member of the council for the City of Garnavillo.
Donald enjoyed hunting and especially fishing. He was a member of the Oelwein Trap Shoot Association and was a loyal and avid watcher of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Don is survived by his four children, Michael (Barbara) Oberbroeckling of Garnavillo, Marcia (Christopher) Franklin of Cedar Rapids, Mark (Jane) Oberbroeckling of Austin, Minn., and Gary (Lynne) Oberbroeckling of Swisher; eight grandchildren, Eric (Emily) Oberbroeckling, Ashley (fiance Kyle Burns) Oberbroeckling, Ryan Oberbroeckling, Jill and Ryan Franklin, Curtis, Kyle and Allison Oberbroeckling; two siblings, Gene (Marita) Oberbroeckling of Dyersville and Clarice (Peter) Domeyer of Dubuque; sister-in-law, Angie Oberbroeckling of Dyersville; two brothers-in-law, Herb Tegeler of Dyersville and Duane O'Brien of Volga; and many friends, nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlotte in 2008; siblings, Betty (Marvin) Olsem, Doris Tegeler and Ralph (Helene) Oberbroeckling; and one sister-in-law, LeMae O'Brien.
