Oakland, Helen (Elizabeth Munger)
Helen (Elizabeth Munger) Oakland, 102, of the Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Mount Vernon, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011. There will be no visitation or services. Her cremated remains will be scattered. Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon, Iowa is handling Helen's arrangements.
Helen is survived by son, Bill (Elvira) Oakland, Cedar Rapids; daughter, Mary (Dean) Piltingsrud, Ankeny, Iowa; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents; husband, Lloyd; and two sisters, Peggy Bercaw and Florence Bredow.
Helen was born September 18, 1908 in Waverly, Iowa, to Frank H. and Grace Morse Munger. She graduated from Waverly High School in 1924, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell College in 1928, and graduated from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y., in 1931 with a Performer's Degree in Organ. Helen married Lloyd C. Oakland August 1, 1931, in Waverly. He died August 19, 1988.
Helen and family lived in Missoula, Montana for 20 years before returning to Iowa in 1968, to Mount Vernon in 1977, and to the Meth-Wick Community in 1995.
Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church, Chapter DT, P.E.O., of Mount Vernon, Mortar Board, and Mu Phi Epsilon International Honorary Music Fraternity. For 45 years, she was an organist for churches in Iowa and Montana.
