Nyquist, John D.
John D. Nyquist, 91, of Cottage Grove Place, died there Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Scheidt will officiate. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; and one daughter, Sarah Nyquist of Scottsdale, Ariz. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
John was born May 28, 1918, in Peoria, Ill., the son of Eliud and Linnea Widen Nyquist. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1941, earning a degree in mechanical engineering. He married Alice L. Schmidt on June 5, 1942, in Cedar Rapids. John joined Collins Radio Co. in 1941 and retired in 1972 as a senior vice president and general manager of the Cedar Rapids Division. On the corporate level he was a member of the board of directors and its Executive Committee.
He served as a director of the University of Illinois Alumni Association and as a charter member and president of the Mechanical/Industrial Engineering Alumni Association Constituent Group. In 1969, he was recognized by the Engineering Department with the Distinguished Alumni Award. He was director of the Peoples Savings and Bank and its successor, Norwest Bank of Cedar Rapids. John was the director and president of the Witwer Senior Center, Abbe Center, YMCA and Marion Rotary Club. He was the director of the Marion Chamber of Commerce and the Marion Economic Development Corp. John was a member of the St. Luke's Hospital board of directors, Cedar Rapids Country Club and Bethany Lutheran Church. John, with his family, funded the “John, Alice and Sarah Nyquist Endowed Chair” in the College of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois. John, with his wife, Alice, commissioned wood carvings by Ernst Schwidder for Bethany Lutheran Church. He also donated a private suite at St. Luke's Hospital in his mother's name.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church or to the charity of the donor's choice in John's name.
