Nyquist, Alice L.
Alice L. Nyquist, 95, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Bethany Lutheran Church. The Rev. Randy Nord will officiate with private entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends my call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. today.
Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Nyquist of Scottsdale, Ariz.; nephews, G. Richard (Jackie) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Gerald (Wava) Schmidt of Lisbon, James (Susan) Schmidt of Martelle, and Randy (Judi) Johnson of Longmont, Colo.; and a niece, Mary Ann (Pete) Shields of Falmouth, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Luke and Tjede Schmidt; and several brothers and sisters.
Alice was born on Oct. 8, 1916, in Pomeroy, Iowa, the daughter of Luke and Tjede (Lubben) Schmidt. She graduated from Midwest College of Commerce, Sioux City, in 1935. Alice moved to Cedar Rapids in 1938, to work for Iowa National Mutual Insurance Co. She married John D. Nyquist on June 5, 1942 in Cedar Rapids. John passed away on Jan. 15, 2010. She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, PEO Chapter IH and was a 60 year member of the St. Luke's Auxiliary.
Above all else, Alice loved to bake, and share her fabulous creations with her family and friends. She loved to play bridge, even playing up to two weeks ago. During her life she traveled the United States and abroad, she enjoyed playing golf, bowling and gardening.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Alice's name may be given to the Bethany Lutheran Church or to the St. Luke's Health Care Foundation.
