Norman F. Wachal, 89, of Walker, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, under the care of hospice at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Norman died peacefully with his loving family by his side. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors: Walker Cemetery, Walker.
Survivors include his brother, LaVern Wachal of Fairbank; sister, Bernice Bellach of Walker; sister-in-law, Ruth Wachal of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Norman was born Aug. 6, 1928, to George and May (Helbig) Wachal in Walker. He served in the U.S. Army as a private 1st class in the 2nd Armored Division Artillery, 78th AFA Bn, during the Korean War. Norman was a self-employed farmer, starting farming in 1942. He enjoyed woodworking, photography and wine-making. Norman loved fishing, especially catching big carp in the Wapsi River. He built and repaired clocks and enjoyed collecting model trains. Norman was lovingly known as "Gocko" by his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Erwin and Marvin Wachal; brother-in-law, Jim Bellach; and sister-in-law, Helga Wachal.
