Norman Dean
Norman Dean
Bettendorf
Norman “Norm” was born October 21, 1931 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to David and Mabel Irene Dean. He spent the majority of his childhood in Springfield, Missouri. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1948 he moved to Davenport, Iowa where he met Shirley Schroeder, a nursing student. They were married on April 15, 1955 in Independence, Iowa and shared 63 years of marriage until Shirley’s passing in 2018.
Family was at the center of Norm’s life. He especially cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting with his dogs, fishing, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes alongside Shirley. Known for his great sense of humor, Norm was also a talented carpenter who created beautiful pieces of furniture.
Norm dedicated 44 years to Brammer Manufacturing where he retired in 1992 as Vice President of Manufacturing. He took great pride in his work and valued the relationships he built throughout his career. After retirement Norm and Shirley traveled and spent winters in Arizona where he discovered lawn bowling. They also went on Mercedes Club outings where Norm’s favorite event was the Clean Car Show.
The Lions Club played a significant role in Norm’s life. He held several Lions offices including club president, district governor and as Iowa Lions Sight Conservation Foundation president and trustee. He also served on the Lions International board of directors and during this time Norm and Shirley had the opportunity to visit numerous locations around the world.
Norm is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Tom) Kendall of Cedar Rapids; son, Daniel Dean of Waukee; grandchildren, Nate (Angie) Hostetter, Natalie Reed (Tyler Smith), Claire (Chris) Kloos, Zach Hostetter, Chelsea McMillan, Jordan Dean, and Ashley Dean (Jackson Garlock) and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; daughter, Rebecca McMillan; brother, David Dean, and sisters, Louise Cloyd and Imogene Beyer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Christ’s Family Church 4601 Utica Ridge Road Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Norm will be laid to rest at Oakdale Memorial Gardens in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Lion’s Club Charitable Foundation 2300 South Duff Avenue Ames, Iowa 50010.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Christ’s Family Church for their kindness including providing transportation and welcoming Norm into church activities and St. Croix Hospice for making his final days comfortable. A special thank-you goes to the staff at the Fountains Senior Living for their dedication, care and compassion.
