Nolte, Jean Ellen
Jean Ellen Nolte, 63, of Watkins, passed away June 17, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a long, courageous battle against brain cancer. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watkins. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's by Father Jack McClure, C.PP.S.
Jean was born in Cascade, Iowa, on Dec. 10, 1946, the daughter of William and Mary Duffy (Felton). She grew up near Temple Hill and attended St. Peter's school and completed her education at Aquin High School in Cascade. She then attended the nurse technician program at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids and was employed as a nurse technician at Mercy and then by Dr. Schueller. She was later employed as a dental hygienist with Dr. Benson. Before her illness, Jean was employed for 21 years at Frontier Herbs in Norway, Iowa.
Jean was united in marriage to Daniel B. Nolte on Nov. 13, 1971, at Temple Hill Church near Cascade. Dan and Jean made their home and farmed southeast of Watkins. She lived in their home on the farm until June 5, 2010, when she entered the Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha due to declining health after her 4 1/2-year battle.
She is survived by her husband, Dan; children, Kim (Brian) Bistricky of Swisher, Matt (LeAnn) Nolte of La Porte City, Mark (Denise) Nolte of Norway and Becky Nolte of Davenport; grandchildren, Danika, Calista and Marissa Nolte of La Porte City, and Brianna, Conner and Wyatt Bistricky of Swisher; stepgrandchildren, Brittany Eveland (Nolte) and Haley Knapp (Nolte) of Norway; her mother, Mary Duffy of Cascade; her siblings, Rose (Kenny) Zieser of Coggon, Donald Duffy, Gerald “Buddy” Duffy, Dick Duffy and Tom (Sandy) Duffy, all of Cascade, Marilyn (Harlan) Zuber of Williamsburg, Mary (Wayne) Koutny of Cedar Rapids and Carol (Eldon) Rohlena of DeKalb, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her father, William, on July 15, 1972; and her brother, Joe, on March 28, 2008.
Jean was a remarkable wife, mother, sister, and friend to so many people. Our only wish is that her grandchildren had more time with her to know how much she truly loved them. She touched all of us with her unique brand of love, and she will be sorely missed.
Brosh Funeral Service is serving the family.
